Resilience Session: Learning From Systems Resilience for More Impactful Global Development **ONLINE ONLY**

In 2014, environmental sustainability researchers wrote and published a short book through Cambridge University Press detailing seven principles for building resilience in socio-ecological systems: “Principles for Building Resilience: Sustaining Ecosystem Services in Social-Ecological Systems.” Since then, these seven principles have been pulled into systems thinking in many sectors, and it’s time to apply them to the systems within which global development work happens. Using these principles to ground ourselves in a common understanding of systems resilience, we’ll talk through examples of how the tenets play out in a smaller social-ecological system and then a broader example within a global development system. The second half of the session will workshop resilience in your own global development system by exploring how it maps to the seven tenets and explore where you hold power to influence greater resilience – in your practice, and in the system as a whole.
This session can help organizations working through strategic planning to help develop priorities which leverage where you are within a system as well as your own organization as a system, itself. It will help individuals within organizations recognize how they, as a single person, influence the level of resiliency of their organization and the resiliency of the sector they work in, and how they might shift to increase their personal impact.

Annie Contractor grew up in rural Wyoming, served as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia, hand-built a log cabin, farmed lettuce in Hawai’i, and amplified Brazilian activists. Along the way she designed and led four social justice research studies on three continents that have directly impacted food security, environmental justice, housing justice, and low-income mothers’ access to quality jobs. Workplace Equity Partners leverages these skills of applied research and resiliency planning to the task of eliminating differences in pay, career opportunity, and work satisfaction for people of all identities – so they, and the organizations in which they work, can thrive.
